Steps
Park on level ground, switch the scooter off and put the side stand down. Look over the tread for a nail, screw or thorn and mark the spot with chalk.
Spray soapy water over the tread. Bubbles forming at one point show the leak. A slow puncture may take a minute to show, so watch closely.
Grip the nail with pliers and pull it straight out, keeping the same angle as the hole so you do not tear the rubber.
Push the reamer into the hole and twist it a few times to clean the hole and rough up the inside walls. Keep the reamer straight.
Thread a rubber plug through the eye of the fork tool so it sits centred. Coat it with rubber cement if your kit includes a tube.
Push the plug tool firmly into the hole until about two thirds of the plug is inside the tyre. Do not twist it on the way in.
Pull the tool straight back out so the plug stays in the hole, then trim the ends flush with the tread, leaving about 2 mm standing proud.
Inflate the tyre to the pressure printed on the tyre sidewall or listed in the Ather app, then spray soapy water again to confirm no bubbles appear.
Ride slowly for the first few kilometres and check the pressure again the next day. Top it up if it has dropped.
Tips and common mistakes
A plug is a roadside fix, so get an internal patch or a new tyre from an Ather service centre for a long term repair.
Never plug a hole on the sidewall or shoulder of the tyre, since the flex there will push the plug out.
Wear gloves and keep your fingers clear of the wheel while you push the reamer and plug tool.
Carry the kit and a small pump under the seat so a puncture does not leave you stranded.
Questions
Can I repair the puncture without removing the wheel?
Yes. A plug kit is designed to be used with the wheel still on the scooter, which is why it works well at the roadside. You only need enough room to reach the hole.
How long does a tyre plug last?
A plug can hold for weeks or even months, but it is not a permanent repair. Have the tyre checked and patched from the inside at a service centre as soon as you can.
What if the hole is too big for a plug?
If the cut is larger than the plug or the tyre keeps losing pressure, stop riding on it. Call for help or get the scooter to a workshop for a replacement tyre.
