Steps

  1. Leave Acrobat open and do not close the document tab. Closing the app can wipe the temporary file Acrobat uses to hold your unsaved edits.

  2. Open the File menu and hover over Open Recent, or go to Home and check the Recent list. Click any copy of the file showing today's date.

  3. Look for the Document Recovery pane. In many versions it sits under View, then Show/Hide, then Navigation Panes. Double-click any listed file and save it straight away.

  4. On Windows, press the Windows key plus R, type %temp% and press Enter. Sort the folder by Date modified and look for.tmp or.pdf files from the last hour.

  5. Copy any likely file to your Desktop, rename the extension to.pdf and open it in Acrobat. Work on a copy so the original temp file stays untouched.

  6. Check the Recycle Bin, then search File Explorer for *.pdf modified today. On a Mac, open Finder, press Command and F, and filter by date modified.

  7. If the file lived in Adobe cloud storage, sign in at acrobat.adobe.com, open the file and check the version history for an earlier copy you can download.

  8. Turn on AutoSave for next time. Go to Preferences, then Documents, then Auto-Save, tick Automatically Save Document Changes To and set the interval to 1 minute.

Tips and common mistakes

Use File then Save As to store a recovered file under a new name, so you never overwrite the original.

Acrobat auto-saves cloud files by default but not files on your hard drive, so change the Auto-Save setting before you start long edits.

Do not clear your temp folder or install cleanup tools while you are still hunting for the lost PDF.

If the recovered file refuses to open, try a different PDF reader before assuming the data is gone.

Questions

Where does Adobe Acrobat store unsaved files?

Acrobat writes temporary copies into your system temp folder, which is %temp% on Windows. These files often end in.tmp and can be renamed to.pdf so Acrobat will open them.

Can I recover a PDF after Acrobat crashes?

Sometimes. Reopen Acrobat and check the Document Recovery pane and the recent files list first. If nothing shows up, search the temp folder for files modified around the time of the crash.

Why did AutoSave not save my PDF?

AutoSave is switched on by default only for files kept in Adobe cloud storage. For files on your own drive you have to enable it yourself in Preferences under Documents.
