What you need
Steps
Park the Bronco on flat, level ground and chock the wheels you are not lifting. Set the transmission to Park and keep the key fob inside the cabin.
Close all doors and make sure the electronic parking brake is released, not engaged. The service mode procedure needs the brake off to start.
Switch the ignition on without starting the engine, so the dash lights come up but the engine stays off.
Press and hold the electronic parking brake switch in the release direction while you press the brake pedal. Hold both until the dash shows the brake service message.
Watch the instrument cluster for the maintenance mode indicator or message. When it appears, release the switch and the pedal.
Confirm the parking brake is now retracted and the mode is active before you jack up the truck. If no message shows, switch off and repeat the sequence.
Jack up the Bronco and support it on stands, then replace your pads or rotors as planned. Never work under a truck held only by a jack.
When the job is done, lower the truck, switch the ignition on and press the parking brake switch to apply the brake. The mode exits and the brake re-engages.
Pump the brake pedal a few times before driving, then test the brakes slowly at low speed in a safe area.
Tips and common mistakes
Do not force the pistons back by hand while the parking brake is engaged, or you can damage the electronic brake motor.
If the service mode message does not appear, check that all doors are closed and the brake is fully released before retrying.
Bleed the brakes after pad or caliper work if the pedal feels soft, and check the fluid level in the reservoir.
Work on one corner at a time and keep the key fob away from the truck so it cannot wake the brake system mid-job.
Questions
Why do I need Brake Maintenance Mode?
It retracts the electronic parking brake so the rear calipers are free to work on. Skipping it can damage the parking brake motor when you push the piston back.
How do I know the Bronco is in service mode?
A message or indicator appears in the instrument cluster and the parking brake stays retracted. If you see nothing, the sequence did not take.
Can I drive with the Bronco in Brake Maintenance Mode?
No. Exit the mode by applying the parking brake before you drive, or the rear brakes will not work correctly.
