Steps
Check the current test format on the official TOEFL site before you buy any prep book. Materials printed before January 2026 use the old 0 to 120 scale and the old task types.
Plan for about 90 minutes of testing inside a two-hour appointment. Reading takes roughly 30 minutes for 50 questions, listening about 29 minutes for 47, writing 23 minutes for 12 items and speaking 8 minutes for 11 items.
Decide between testing at home and at a test centre. Check your room, internet connection and webcam setup if you choose the home option, and confirm the ID rules for your country.
Practise the three reading tasks: Complete the Words, where you pick the word that fits a blank from context, Read in Daily Life with short emails and notices, and Read an Academic Passage with up to five questions.
Train the four listening tasks: Listen and Choose a Response, Conversation, Announcement and Academic Talk. Play each clip once only, as the real test does, and note the main idea and key details.
Work on the two speaking tasks. For Listen and Repeat, play a short sentence once and repeat it exactly without reading any text. Record yourself and compare your version to the original.
Practise the three writing tasks under a timer. Keep answers short and clear, and check that each one answers the question asked rather than adding extra material.
Take a full adaptive practice test once a week. Because question difficulty changes with your answers, review the harder items you missed and note which task type caused the problem.
Track your section scores on the 1 to 6 scale and average them to estimate your overall band. Aim to move each section up by half a band before test day.
Tips and common mistakes
Do not rely on pre-2026 prep books, since the task types and scoring scale have both changed.
Practise listening and speaking with audio only, because the new tasks do not show written text on screen.
The question counts are approximate on an adaptive test, so do not panic if your section feels shorter or longer than expected.
Read the retake and ID rules before booking so a paperwork problem does not cost you a test date.
Questions
Can I still use TOEFL materials from before 2026?
Use them only for general English practice. The task types and the 1 to 6 scoring scale are different now, so old practice tests will not match the real exam.
How is the new TOEFL scored?
Each of the four sections is scored on a 1 to 6 band aligned with the CEFR, and your overall score is the average of the four. This makes results easier to compare with tests like IELTS.
Is the test really adaptive?
Yes. Question difficulty adjusts to your level as you work through a section, so the number of questions you see can vary from the published figures.
