Steps
Know the format first. Each announcement is 40 to 85 words, spoken by one person, and plays only once. Expect campus topics like schedules, event invitations, rule changes, directions or student achievements.
Treat the first two sentences as the key. Announcements usually open with who the message is for and what it is about. Catch those lines and the main purpose question is often already answered.
While listening, sort details into four buckets: who is speaking, what the event is, when and where it happens, and who is invited. The questions pull from these exact categories.
Watch for the repackaged detail trap. A wrong option takes a side fact, such as the speaker working in the IT office, and offers it as the main topic. The office is the source, not the subject.
Watch for the invented restriction trap. If the announcement says everyone is welcome, a wrong option narrows it to one group such as gym members or on-campus residents. Reject options that add limits you did not hear.
Compare each option word by word with what you heard. Using digital media and creating digital media content are not the same, so one word can make an option wrong.
Practise with pause and answer. Play one item, pause before the answer, write your choice and your reason, then check it against the explanation.
Train your ear daily with short campus-style audio. Listen once, note the who, what, when, where and why, then check how much you recalled.
Tips and common mistakes
Do not wait for the whole announcement before thinking about the main idea; the opening lines usually give it away.
Write the four categories on scratch paper before the section starts so you sort details automatically.
If an option adds a group or condition you did not hear, treat it as wrong even if the rest sounds familiar.
Since the audio plays once, practise without pausing or replaying so your practice matches test conditions.
Questions
How long is each announcement and how many times does it play?
Each one is about 40 to 85 words with a single speaker. The audio plays only once, so you need to catch the opening lines and take quick notes.
What are the most common wrong answer types?
Two patterns repeat. One turns a small detail into the main topic. The other adds a restriction, such as limiting an open event to one group, that the announcement never stated.
How long is the TOEFL Listening section?
The section has 47 items and takes about 29 minutes. It is adaptive, so the items and timing can shift based on your performance.
