Steps
Open Procreate and tap the plus sign in the top right to create a new canvas. Pick a screen size preset so the canvas fits your iPad.
Save your reference image to the iPad Photos app, then tap the wrench icon, choose Add, then Insert a photo and select it.
Tap the layers icon, open the reference image layer and lower its opacity to about 30 to 40 percent so you can see your lines over it.
Tap the plus sign in the layers panel to add a new empty layer above the reference image.
Open the brush library and choose a brush from the Inking set, such as Technical Pen or Studio Pen, for clean even lines.
Set the brush size small, around 3 to 6 percent, so your traced lines stay thin and tidy.
Trace the outlines of each food shape slowly on the new layer. Keep your strokes long and smooth rather than short and choppy.
Use two fingers to pinch and zoom in on tight curves, then trace the smaller details like faces and highlights.
Hide the reference layer by tapping its check box, then look over your traced drawing and fix any wobbly lines with the eraser.
Tap the wrench icon, choose Share, then export as PNG or PSD to save your finished practice sheet.
Tips and common mistakes
Turn on the drawing guide or use QuickShape by holding your stroke at the end to straighten lines.
Keep your hand relaxed and trace in one steady motion instead of stopping and starting.
Practise the same shape a few times on separate layers to compare your line quality.
Lower the reference opacity more if your lines get lost against the image.
Questions
Do I need an Apple Pencil to trace in Procreate?
No, any compatible stylus works, but the Apple Pencil gives pressure sensitivity and smoother lines. A finger works for basic tracing but is harder to control.
Can I trace an image I found online?
Use it for private practice only. Published artwork is usually copyrighted, so do not share or sell traced copies of someone else's image.
Why are my traced lines jagged?
Zoom in further and slow down. A smaller brush size and a smoother inking brush also help reduce jagged edges.
