How to colour Sonic the hedgehog in Procreate on iPad

Colour a Sonic line drawing in Procreate by layering flat colours under your line art. It suits beginners who already have a sketch or outline on the canvas. You need an iPad with Procreate and a drawing of Sonic ready to colour.

What you need

Steps

  1. Open Procreate and create a new canvas, or import your Sonic line drawing. Keep the outline on its own top layer.

  2. Tap the layer with the line art and set its blend mode to Multiply so colours show through the lines.

  3. Add a new layer below the line art. This is where your flat colours will go.

  4. Pick the Monoline brush from the Inking set and choose a solid blue for Sonic's body.

  5. Use the ColorDrop tool: drag a colour from the top right colour circle into a body area, then adjust the ColorDrop threshold slider so it fills cleanly.

  6. Repeat ColorDrop for each area: peach for the face and belly, red for the shoes, white for the gloves.

  7. Add a new layer above the flats for shading. Set it to Multiply and paint soft shadows with a lower opacity brush.

  8. Add a highlight layer on top, use a light colour and paint small shine marks on the shoes and eyes.

  9. Hide the line art layer briefly to check for gaps or stray colour, then fix them with the eraser.

  10. Export the finished image with Share, then choose PNG or JPEG to save it to your iPad.

Tips and common mistakes

ColorDrop only fills closed shapes, so close any gaps in your line art first.

Keep flats, shading and highlights on separate layers so you can fix one without touching the others.

Use a slightly darker shade of each base colour for shadows instead of black, which looks muddy.

Questions

Do I need to draw Sonic myself first?

No. You can import any Sonic line art as a PNG and colour it, as long as the outline is on its own layer.

Why does ColorDrop leave white gaps?

The shape has a break in the outline. Zoom in, close the gap with a brush, then try the fill again.

Can I do this on a phone?

Procreate runs on iPad only. On iPhone you would need a different drawing app such as Procreate Pocket.
