Steps

  1. Pick a spot with good sun and drainage. For a pot, choose one at least 30 cm deep and check it has holes in the base.

  2. Sort your bulbs into three groups by size: large, medium and small. Each group will flower at a different time.

  3. Fill the pot or bed with soil to about 20 cm below the rim. Leave room for the deepest layer of bulbs.

  4. Press the largest bulbs into the soil, pointed end up, about 10 to 15 cm apart. Cover them with a 5 cm layer of soil.

  5. Set the medium bulbs on that layer, spaced about 8 to 10 cm apart, and cover with another 5 cm of soil.

  6. Place the smallest bulbs on top, about 5 cm apart, then cover with 5 cm of soil.

  7. Water well until it drains from the bottom. Keep the soil slightly moist through autumn and winter.

  8. Wait for the layers to bloom in turn from early to late spring. Let the leaves die back before cutting them.

Tips and common mistakes

Never stack bulbs directly on top of each other. Keep a soil layer between each group so roots have room.

Point bulbs with the flat base down and the pointed tip up.

Skip a saucer under the pot so winter rain can drain away and bulbs do not rot.

Label the pot with the bulb names so you know what is coming up in spring.

Questions

Can I plant a bulb lasagna in the ground instead of a pot?

Yes. Dig a bed about 25 to 30 cm deep and build the same layers, with the largest bulbs at the bottom. Make sure the soil drains well.

When should I plant the bulbs?

Plant in autumn, before the first hard frost. Bulbs need a cold period to flower well in spring.

Do I need to water the pot in winter?

Water only when the soil feels dry. In wet winters, keep the pot raised so excess water drains out.
