What you need

Steps

  1. Pick pots with drainage holes. Use pots at least 15 cm deep for rain lilies and 20 cm deep for daffodils, wide enough to leave 5 cm between each bulb and the pot edge.

  2. Mix a free-draining potting compost: two parts peat-free potting mix to one part perlite or coarse grit. Fill each pot two-thirds full.

  3. Set the bulbs in place, pointed end up. Plant daffodil bulbs 10 to 15 cm deep, rain lily bulbs just below the surface and amaryllis with the top third of the bulb above the soil.

  4. Space bulbs 5 to 8 cm apart so they do not touch each other or the pot sides. Fill around them with the mix and firm it gently.

  5. Leave about 2 cm of space below the pot rim for water. Water thoroughly until water runs out of the drainage holes.

  6. Put daffodils and rain lilies in a sunny spot. Keep amaryllis in bright, indirect light. Move pots indoors or into a frost-free shed if temperatures drop below freezing.

  7. Water when the top 2 to 3 cm of mix feels dry. Feed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser once shoots appear.

  8. After flowering, cut off the flower stems but leave the leaves to die back naturally. This feeds the bulb for next year.

Tips and common mistakes

Plant daffodil bulbs in autumn so they get a cold period before spring flowering.

Do not keep the mix soggy before roots form, or the bulbs will rot.

Label each pot with the bulb name and planting date so you know what is growing.

Keep the neck and shoulders of amaryllis bulbs clear of the soil to help prevent rot.

Questions

How deep should daffodil bulbs go in a pot?

Plant them 10 to 15 cm deep, measured from the base of the bulb to the soil surface, or about three times the bulb's height.

Can I grow these bulbs indoors?

Yes. Rain lilies and amaryllis do well indoors in bright light. Daffodils need a cool, sunny spot and usually flower better after a cold autumn and winter.

How long until the bulbs flower?

Daffodils flower in spring, rain lilies in summer after warm spells or rain, and amaryllis about six to eight weeks after planting.
