What you need

Steps

  1. Pick a spot for the hellebore with dappled shade or morning sun and soil that drains well. Dig a hole as deep and twice as wide as the pot.

  2. Water the hellebore in its pot, then ease the plant out. Loosen the roots slightly with your fingers.

  3. Set the plant in the hole at the same depth it grew in the pot. Backfill with soil mixed with compost and firm it in.

  4. Water the hellebore well and spread a mulch ring around it, keeping mulch off the crown.

  5. Choose a sunny spot for the daffodils. Dig holes about three times as deep as the bulb is tall, roughly 10 to 15 cm deep.

  6. Set each bulb in pointy end up and space them about 10 cm apart. Backfill and firm the soil.

  7. Water the bulbs in and mark the spot so you do not dig there later.

  8. Walk the border and note gaps for spring colour, then plan any extra planting.

Tips and common mistakes

Plant daffodil bulbs by early November so they have time to root before the ground freezes.

Never plant bulbs pointy end down, they will waste energy growing the wrong way.

Hellebores like moist but free-draining soil, so add grit to heavy clay.

Keep mulch away from the hellebore crown to avoid rot.

Questions

How deep should daffodil bulbs go?

About three times the height of the bulb, usually 10 to 15 cm. Deeper planting in cold areas helps protect them from frost.

Can I plant daffodils in pots?

Yes. Use a pot with drainage holes and a gritty compost mix, and plant the bulbs at the same depth as in the ground.

When will the hellebore flower?

Lenten roses usually bloom from late winter into early spring, giving colour when little else is out.
