What you need
Steps
Pick a clear reference photo with soft, even lighting. Print it or keep it on a screen beside your paper so you can compare colors as you paint.
Sketch the head lightly in pencil. Mark the eyes, nose, mouth and jawline, then erase until the lines are faint.
Mix a pale skin wash from yellow, a little red and a touch of water. Test it on scrap paper and adjust until it matches the light areas of the face.
Wet the face area with clean water and lay the pale wash over it. Keep it thin and let the paper dry fully before adding more.
Build a slightly deeper mix for the mid tones. Paint the cheeks, nose sides, eye sockets and chin with soft edges.
Add shadows under the jaw, beside the nose and in the hairline with a cooler, darker mix. Use a light touch and blend edges while damp.
Paint the eyes, eyebrows, nostrils and lips with a small brush and stronger color. Leave small white gaps for highlights.
Let everything dry, then check the contrast. Deepen the darkest shadows and soften any hard edges with a clean damp brush.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep skin washes thin and build them in layers, since watercolor dries lighter than it looks when wet.
Test every mix on scrap paper before touching the face.
Let each layer dry completely to avoid muddy colors.
Use a reference photo with soft light, because harsh shadows are hard to paint in watercolor.
Questions
Do I need expensive paints for a portrait?
No. A small set of good student or artist grade paints in primary colors is enough. Mix your skin tones from yellow, red and a little blue.
How do I stop the skin looking muddy?
Use fewer colors in each mix and let layers dry between washes. Too much brushing on damp paper stirs the pigment and dulls it.
What paper should I use?
Cold-pressed 100 percent cotton paper around 300gsm works best. It holds water well and lets you lift color without tearing.
