What you need

Steps

  1. Lay everything out on the floor and check each item works. Charge your phone and power bank the night before so nothing dies on the trail.

  2. Put navigation first: a paper map, a compass or an offline map on your phone. Know the route before you leave.

  3. Add a power bank and cable so your phone stays charged for maps and emergencies.

  4. Pack high-calorie snacks you will actually eat, plus a water bottle or filter like the Katadyn Befree.

  5. Build a small first aid kit and add an emergency blanket. Both fit in a side pocket and weigh little.

  6. Include a knife or multitool, a small light and an extra layer. A buff adds warmth for very little weight.

  7. Add a trowel and toilet paper for bathroom stops, and pack out everything you bring in.

  8. Check the forecast and add condition gear: a packable rain jacket, a puffy coat or microspikes for ice.

  9. If your dog comes, pack a leash, a bowl, lots of water, treats and compostable poop bags.

  10. Weigh the pack, adjust the straps and do a final check that nothing is missing.

Tips and common mistakes

A day hike still needs the ten essentials, so do not skip light, knife or first aid just because the walk is short.

Pack the heaviest items close to your back and keep snacks and water where you can reach them without stopping.

Check the weather the morning of the hike and swap layers rather than carrying everything every time.

Tell someone your route and expected return time before you set off.

Questions

Do I really need gear for a short day hike?

Yes. Even a few hours on the trail can bring a turned ankle, a sudden storm or a wrong turn. A small kit covers the most likely problems.

How much water should I carry?

It depends on heat, distance and effort. Carry at least one litre for a short cool hike and more in heat, or bring a filter to refill from streams.

What should I pack for my dog?

Bring a leash, a bowl, more water than you think, treats and poop bags. Check that dogs are allowed on the trail before you go.
