Steps
Print the official NORCET syllabus and keep it at the front of your notes. Tick each topic once you have written notes on it, so nothing is left out.
Keep one notebook or one clear section per subject, such as medical surgical nursing, community health and fundamentals. Write the subject and topic name at the top of every page.
Read the topic once from your textbook first, then close the book and write the notes in your own words. This shows you what you actually understood.
Split each page into two columns. Put headings and key points on the left and numbers on the right: drug doses, normal values, and classification lists.
Limit each topic to one page using a fixed pattern: definition, causes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and nursing care. Skip long paragraphs.
Use short forms and symbols you define once at the front of the notebook. Draw a quick flowchart for anatomy and pathophysiology instead of describing it.
Leave a wide margin on each page. Add facts from previous year papers and mock tests there in a different colour so updates stand out.
After each revision, rewrite the page as a one-page recall sheet with only headings, keywords and numbers. Revise from that sheet in the final week.
Test yourself by covering the right-hand column and saying the numbers and lists out loud. Mark anything you forget and rewrite that line.
Tips and common mistakes
Do not copy lines straight from the textbook. If you cannot shorten a paragraph, you have not understood it yet.
Write notes after reading a topic, not while reading, or you will end up copying instead of thinking.
Date each page so you know which notes are old and may need updating.
Keep every topic to one page. Notes you cannot finish revising in the last week are of no use.
Questions
Are handwritten notes better than typed notes for NORCET?
Handwritten notes slow you down, which helps you remember, and they are easy to draw diagrams in. Typed notes are faster to search, so many people type long topics and handwrite the summary sheets.
How long should one topic's notes be?
Aim for one page per topic and never more than two. If a topic is huge, split it into smaller parts such as definition and causes on one page, management and nursing care on the next.
Should I make separate notes for previous year questions?
Yes, but not a new notebook. Add the repeated facts and question patterns in the margin of the matching topic page, so revision happens in one place.
