What you need
Steps
Open PowerPoint and start a blank presentation. Right-click the slide, choose Format Background, pick Solid fill and set a dark color such as near-black or deep navy.
Go to Insert, Shapes and pick Parallelogram. Draw one on the left side of the slide, then set its fill to a light gray or white and remove the outline.
Copy the shape with Ctrl+D and paste it into a row. Space the copies evenly, then copy the whole row and paste it below to build a full grid.
Select all the parallelogram shapes, go to Shape Format, Merge Shapes and choose Combine or Union so the grid becomes one single shape.
Insert a photo, place it over the merged shape, then select the photo first and the shape second. Use Shape Format, Merge Shapes, Intersect to mask the photo into the grid.
Add a short title and subtitle with a clean sans-serif font like Segoe UI or Montserrat. Keep the text small and place it in the empty area of the slide.
Duplicate the slide with Ctrl+D and change the photo or move the shape on the copy. On the second slide, go to Transitions, pick Push and set the direction.
Select the title text box, open Animations, choose Fly In and set the direction and start option. Repeat for the other text boxes so they appear in order.
Press Shift+F5 to preview the slideshow and check the transition and animation timing. Adjust the duration in the Animations pane if anything feels too fast.
Tips and common mistakes
Select the photo before the shape when using Intersect, or the merge will cut the wrong object.
Keep the grid lines thin and the photo busy so the masked shapes stay readable.
Use the same dark background on every slide so the push transition looks seamless.
Save the file as.pptx so the animations and merged shapes stay editable.
Questions
Do I need PowerPoint 365 for Merge Shapes?
Merge Shapes is available in PowerPoint 2013 and later, including Microsoft 365. In older versions the button may be missing.
Why did my Intersect result turn blank?
The shapes probably did not overlap. Move the photo so it sits fully over the merged grid, then select the photo first and the shape second.
Can I use this design in Google Slides?
Google Slides has no Merge Shapes tool, so build the masked grid in PowerPoint and export the slides as images if you need them elsewhere.
