Steps
Cut a 30 cm (12 in) length of yarn and put it aside. This is the tie that holds the pom pom together.
Hold a four-tine dinner fork with the tines pointing up. Wrap yarn around the middle of the tines, not the handle, about 50 times.
Keep the wraps side by side in one even layer. Bunched, overlapping wraps make a lumpy pom pom that is hard to tie.
Slide the reserved tie yarn under the wrapped bundle, through the gap beside the middle tine. Pull both ends to the back of the fork.
Tie a tight double knot around the middle of the bundle while it is still on the fork. A loose knot lets the cut pieces fall out.
Slide the bundle off the fork and hold it over a bin. Snip through every loop on both sides with sharp scissors.
Fluff the strands and trim the surface little by little until the ball looks even. Cut small amounts, since yarn cannot be put back.
For a larger pom pom, wrap the yarn around a 6 to 8 cm (2.5 to 3 in) piece of cardboard instead, then tie and cut the same way.
Tips and common mistakes
More wraps give a denser pom pom, so aim for 50 to 60 for thin yarn and about 40 for chunky yarn.
Pull the middle knot as tight as you can before cutting, or the strands will pull out.
Keep your fingers clear of the scissor blades when you snip the loops close to the knot.
Trim in good light and in small snips so the pom pom stays round.
Questions
How many times should I wrap the yarn?
About 50 wraps of thin yarn around a fork gives a full pom pom. Fewer wraps make a sparse, floppy one.
Can I make a pom pom without a fork?
Yes. Wrap the yarn around two fingers or a cardboard ring, then tie and cut it the same way.
Why is my pom pom falling apart?
The middle tie was too loose or the knot came undone. Tie a double knot and pull it tight before cutting the loops.
