Steps
Clear a table with good light and plug in the glue gun so it heats while you work. Put out the yarn, fork, scissors, felt, pearl bead and glue gun.
Hold the fork in one hand. Wrap the yarn around the four tines, over the middle of the fork, about 40 times for a small pom pom. Keep the wraps side by side and fairly loose.
Cut a 15 cm (6 inch) piece of yarn. Slip it under the wrapped bundle between the two middle tines and tie a tight double knot.
Slide the bundle off the fork. Cut through all the loops on both ends with small sharp scissors.
Fluff the strands and trim the pom pom with small snips until it looks round. Repeat until you have eight: two bigger ones for the head and body, six smaller ones for the ears, arms and legs.
Put a dot of hot glue on the body pom pom and press the head pom pom onto it. Hold for about 10 seconds until the glue sets.
Glue the two ear pom poms to the top sides of the head. Glue two arms to the sides of the body and two legs underneath.
Cut a small oval of felt for the muzzle and glue it to the face. Glue the pearl bead on top as the nose, then leave the bear to dry for a few minutes.
Tips and common mistakes
More wraps give a fatter pom pom, so count them if you want all eight pieces to match.
Tie the middle knot as tight as you can, or the pom pom will shed yarn when you trim it.
Trim a little at a time and turn the pom pom as you cut, so you do not snip off too much.
Keep fingers away from the hot glue and the metal tip of the gun, and let children do the wrapping only.
Questions
How many times do I wrap the yarn around the fork?
About 40 wraps makes a small pom pom for limbs and ears. Use 50 to 60 wraps for the head and body so they look bigger than the rest.
What if I do not have a glue gun?
Fabric glue or strong tacky glue works, but you need to hold each piece in place longer and let the bear dry overnight.
Can I use a different fork?
A standard four tine dinner fork is easiest. A wider fork makes a longer pom pom, and a smaller fork makes a tighter, smaller one.
