How to make a pom pom spider with a fork and yarn

Turn leftover wool yarn into a small pom pom spider using an ordinary fork as your loom. You wrap, tie and trim the yarn into a fluffy ball, then add legs and eyes. It suits beginners and kids' craft sessions and needs only yarn, a fork and scissors.

What you need

Steps

  1. Hold a fork with the tines pointing up. Leave a 10 cm (4 inch) tail of wool yarn and press it against the handle with your thumb so it stays put.

  2. Wrap the yarn around the four tines about 50 to 80 times. Keep the wraps side by side and even so the finished pom pom comes out round.

  3. Cut the yarn from the ball. Slide a separate 20 cm (8 inch) length under the bundle, through the gap between the middle tines, and tie a tight double knot around the centre.

  4. Slide the wrapped bundle off the fork. Pull the centre knot tight again so the middle cannot work loose.

  5. Snip through the yarn loops on one end with sharp scissors, then cut the loops on the other end.

  6. Fluff the yarn out and trim the loose ends into an even ball. Cut small amounts at a time until it looks round.

  7. Cut four pipe cleaners in half to make eight legs. Twist or glue them around the centre knot, four on each side.

  8. Glue two small googly eyes onto the pom pom. Let the glue dry fully before you hang or display the spider.

Tips and common mistakes

Wrap with even tension. Loose wraps give a floppy pom pom and very tight wraps are hard to cut through.

Tie the centre knot as tightly as you can before cutting any loops, or the pieces will fall apart.

Cut over a bowl or tray so the yarn scraps do not scatter across the table.

Scissors are sharp, so do the cutting yourself and keep young children away from the blades.

Questions

How many times should I wrap the yarn around the fork?

About 50 to 80 wraps gives a full pom pom. More wraps make it denser and fewer make it sparse and harder to trim neatly.

How do I make a bigger pom pom?

Use a wider fork, a clean comb or a piece of cardboard instead, and wrap more yarn. The tying and trimming method stays the same.

What can I use instead of pipe cleaners for the legs?

Stiff yarn, thin craft wire or folded strips of card all work. Tie or glue them into the centre knot so they hold.
