What you need
Steps
Collect worsted-weight yarn in two or three colours, a clean dinner fork, small sharp scissors, white glue or hot glue, felt scraps, and two beads or googly eyes.
Wrap the body colour around the fork tines about 50 times. Keep the loops side by side and do not pull them tight, or the pom pom will be hard to tie.
Cut an 8-inch piece of strong yarn. Slide it under the wrapped bundle at the centre, tie a double knot, then slide the bundle off the fork.
Cut through all the loops on both sides of the centre tie. Fluff the strands into a ball and trim uneven ends. Make a smaller head with about 25 wraps.
Trim the large pom pom into a slight oval for the body and keep the small one round for the head. Save two long yarn strands for a hanging loop if you want one.
Glue the head pom pom to the top of the body. Press it gently for about 30 seconds, then let it dry before adding details.
Cut a small triangle beak from orange felt and two teardrop tail feathers from green felt. Glue the beak to the face and the feathers to the back.
Glue two beads or googly eyes above the beak. Let the glue dry completely, then hang or display your parrot.
Tips and common mistakes
Wrap the yarn evenly and loosely enough to tie the centre, or the pom pom will be lumpy and may fall apart.
Use a separate strong yarn for the centre tie and double knot it before cutting the loops.
Trim the pom pom a little at a time while turning it, so you get a smooth round shape instead of flat spots.
Hot glue can burn, so use white glue or ask an adult to help with the glue gun.
Questions
How many times should I wrap the yarn around the fork?
Use about 50 wraps for the body and about 25 wraps for the head. More wraps make a denser pom pom.
Can I make the pom poms without a fork?
Yes. Wrap the yarn around two fingers or a piece of cardboard, but a fork gives small, even pom poms.
How do I stop the parrot from falling apart?
Tie the centre very tightly with strong yarn and double knot it before you cut through the loops.
