What you need
Steps
Fold a large sheet of paper in half and draw half a stocking shape against the fold. Aim for about 40 cm tall with a 20 cm wide foot, then cut it out and unfold it.
Lay your fabric flat and place the paper template on top. Cut two matching stocking shapes, adding about 1 cm around the template for a glue margin.
Cut a 15 cm strip of fabric or ribbon for the hanging loop. Fold it in half and glue the two ends to the inside top edge of one stocking piece, at the back corner.
Run a line of hot glue along one side of the stocking, from the top edge down around the toe. Press the second fabric piece on top, lining up the edges.
Glue the other side the same way, working in 10 cm sections so the glue stays hot. Leave the top opening unglued.
Check the seam and add a little more glue anywhere the two layers lift apart. Trim any uneven fabric edges with scissors.
Fold the top edge down about 3 cm and glue it in place to make a hem. Glue a strip of ribbon, lace or contrasting fabric over the fold to hide the raw edge.
Let the glue cool completely, then turn the stocking right side out. Add a name with a fabric marker or glue on a small tag.
Tips and common mistakes
Hot glue gets very hot, so keep your fingers behind the nozzle and press the fabric with a scrap piece, not your skin.
Test the glue on a fabric scrap first, because some shiny or stretchy fabrics peel away.
Felt is the easiest fabric for this project because its edges do not fray.
Work in small sections because hot glue sets in seconds.
Questions
Can I make this without a sewing machine?
Yes. Hot glue holds the fabric together, so you do not need a machine, needle or thread.
What is the best fabric for a no-sew stocking?
Felt is easiest because it does not fray and holds glue well. Cotton and denim also work, but trim loose threads first.
How long does the glue take to dry?
Hot glue sets in under a minute, but let the whole stocking cool for a few minutes before filling it.
