What you need
Steps
Cut a length of yarn about 30 cm long and set it aside. You will use this piece to tie the middle of the chick later.
Hold the fork with the tines pointing up. Leave a short tail and start wrapping the yarn across the four tines, going over the front and back.
Keep wrapping in the same band, around 40 to 60 times, until the bundle looks full and even. More wraps make a fatter chick.
Slide the 30 cm piece between the middle tines, under the bundle, and tie a tight double knot. Pull firmly so the wraps stay together.
Lift the bundle off the fork and cut through the loops on both sides with sharp scissors. Fluff the yarn out into a small ball.
Trim the ends little by little until the chick looks round and even. Cut small amounts so you do not create a bald patch.
Glue two mini beads on for the eyes and a tiny triangle of orange felt or yarn for the beak. Let the glue dry fully.
Glue or sew a short loop of yarn to the top if you want a keychain or bag charm.
Tips and common mistakes
Wrap the yarn in one even band instead of criss-crossing, so the middle tie pulls the strands together neatly.
Use small sharp scissors to cut the loops, since blunt blades crush the yarn and leave ragged ends.
Keep the beads and sharp scissors away from very young children, and supervise older kids.
Swap yellow for white and add a scarf to turn the same fork pom pom into a snowman.
Questions
Can I make this without a fork?
Yes. Wrap the yarn around two fingers or a piece of card about 4 cm wide, then tie the middle and cut the loops the same way.
How much yarn does one chick use?
Roughly 2 to 3 metres, which works out at about 40 to 60 wraps around a standard dinner fork.
How do I stop the chick falling apart?
Tie the middle with a tight double knot before you cut any loops. If the bundle still feels loose, tie it once more.
