What you need
Steps
Pick a small bunch of fresh rosemary and let it dry on a cloth for an hour. Water in the oil makes it spoil faster.
Pour 100 ml of carrier oil into a small pan and warm it on the lowest heat for about 5 minutes. It should feel warm, never bubbling.
Add the rosemary and keep the pan on low for 30 to 40 minutes. The leaves should look dull and slightly crisp when it is ready.
Take the pan off the heat and leave it to cool for around 20 minutes. Hot oil can burn your scalp.
Strain the oil through a fine sieve or muslin cloth into a jug. Press the leaves with a spoon to get the last drops out.
Pour the strained oil into a clean dropper bottle and write the date on the label. Store it in a cool, dark cupboard.
Patch test first by putting a drop behind your ear and waiting 24 hours. Skip the serum if the skin goes red or itchy.
Apply 3 or 4 drops to your scalp 2 or 3 times a week and massage gently for 2 minutes. Wash it out after an hour or leave it overnight.
Tips and common mistakes
If you use rosemary essential oil instead of fresh leaves, add about 12 drops to every 30 ml of carrier oil and never apply it neat.
Keep the oil away from your eyes and skip it on any cut, rash or inflamed patch of scalp.
Hair grows slowly, so give any scalp routine 8 to 12 weeks before you judge it.
Make small batches and replace the bottle after about 3 months, since homemade oils turn rancid.
Questions
How long until I see a difference?
Scalp care works slowly, so expect 8 to 12 weeks of regular use. It helps most with dryness and breakage, not with sudden heavy shedding.
Can I use coconut oil instead of jojoba?
Yes, but coconut oil is solid at room temperature, so warm it gently before use. Jojoba and sweet almond oil stay liquid and feel lighter on the scalp.
How often should I apply it?
Two or three times a week is plenty. Applying it every day can leave your scalp greasy and lead to buildup.
