What you need
Steps
Mix your mask in a bowl. For a gelatin version, bloom 1 tablespoon of gelatin in half a cup of warm water, then stir in 2 tablespoons of conditioner until smooth.
Wash your hair with a mild shampoo to remove oil and product build-up. Rinse well and squeeze out excess water with a towel until hair is damp, not dripping.
Comb your hair to remove tangles. Divide it into four sections and clip each one out of the way so you can reach every strand.
Apply the mask from mid-lengths to the ends, section by section. Keep it about an inch away from your scalp unless your hair is very dry.
Comb through each section with a wide-tooth comb so the mask coats every hair evenly. Add a little more mask to dry, rough ends.
Cover your hair with a shower cap or cling film and wrap a warm towel over it. Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes.
Rinse with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Hot water strips the protein out and brings frizz straight back.
Apply a light conditioner to the ends, rinse, then finish with a leave-in serum. Air dry or blow dry on the cool setting.
Tips and common mistakes
Do a patch test on your inner arm first if you use egg or gelatin, in case of allergy.
Once a week is enough. More often can make hair brittle and prone to breakage.
Strain gelatin mixes through a sieve so lumps do not get stuck in your hair.
Skip the scalp if it gets oily quickly, and rinse thoroughly to avoid flakes.
Questions
How often should I do a keratin hair spa at home?
Once a week works for most dry or frizzy hair. If your hair feels stiff or straw-like, drop to every two weeks.
Will this straighten my hair permanently?
No. A home mask smooths and adds shine for a few days to a week. Only salon keratin treatments give longer lasting smoothing.
Can I use it on coloured or chemically treated hair?
Yes, but wait at least two weeks after colouring or relaxing. Test on one small section first to check how your hair reacts.
