What you need
Steps
Wash and dry the fabric mask so it is clean, then cut off the ear loops and the metal nose strip. Keep the loops for later.
Cut the mask open along the seams and lay the fabric flat. You should have two or more flat pieces of fabric.
Fold one fabric piece in half and draw a butterfly wing shape with a pen or chalk. Cut through both layers so you get two matching wings.
Place the two wing pieces together with the right sides facing out and stitch or glue along the edges. Leave a small gap if you want to stuff it.
Sew a small strip of gathered fabric down the middle to make the butterfly body. Use a rolled piece of the mask fabric.
Add two thin strips as antennae and stitch them to the top of the body. Trim them to the length you want.
Glue or sew the finished butterfly onto a hair clip or a hair band. Press it down and let the glue dry fully.
Tips and common mistakes
Use a clean mask only, since old masks can carry germs and skin oils.
Fabric glue needs about 24 hours to set, so do not wear the clip straight away.
Use small, sharp scissors for the wing curves so the edges stay neat.
Questions
Can I use a disposable mask for this craft?
It is better to use a fabric mask because the layers hold stitches and glue well. Disposable masks tear easily and are not made for reuse.
Do I need a sewing machine?
No. Hand stitching or fabric glue works fine for this small project. A machine only speeds up the wing edges.
How do I attach the butterfly to a hair band?
Sew the butterfly to a wide elastic band with a few strong stitches. Glue alone can come loose when the band stretches.
