What you need
Steps
Lay your book closed on the fabric and cut a piece about 4 cm wider than the book on all sides. Leave extra at the spine edge.
Open the book and measure the height and width of the cover. Mark these on the fabric so you know where the fold lines go.
Spread a thin, even layer of glue over the front cover. Press the fabric down from the spine outward, smoothing out bubbles as you go.
Fold the fabric over the top and bottom edges and glue it to the inside of the cover. Trim the corners first so they sit flat.
Fold the side edges in the same way and glue them down inside the cover. Keep the fabric tight so the cover stays smooth.
Cut a piece of paper or card to the inside cover size and glue it over the raw fabric edges to hide them.
Close the book and press it under a heavy stack of books for about an hour so the glue sets flat.
Tips and common mistakes
Use a thin fabric like cotton or linen. Thick fabric bunches at the corners and looks lumpy.
Test your glue on a fabric scrap first so it does not soak through and stain the front.
Trim corners at a diagonal before folding to get neat, flat edges.
Keep glue away from the book's pages so they do not stick together.
Questions
Can I use a hot glue gun instead of craft glue?
Yes, but work in small sections because hot glue sets fast. It can also add bulk, so use thin lines.
Will this work on a paperback book?
It works best on hardbacks because the stiff cover holds the fabric flat. Paperbacks can bend and wrinkle.
How do I stop the fabric from fraying?
Choose a fabric that does not fray much, or seal the cut edges with a little glue before folding them inside.
