How to learn Hangul without common beginner mistakes

You will learn the Korean alphabet, Hangul, in a way that sticks: the basic letters, syllable blocks and final consonants, without the traps that slow beginners down. It suits total beginners who can study 15 to 20 minutes a day. A notebook and a free reading practice site are all you need.

What you need

Steps

  1. Start with the 24 basic letters: 14 consonants and 10 vowels. Leave double consonants and combined vowels until you can read simple syllables without stopping.

  2. Group letters by mouth shape and look. Say each sound out loud as you write it, five times per letter, so the shape and sound link early.

  3. Learn how syllable blocks work. Each block starts with a consonant, then a vowel, and may end with a final consonant, so ㅎ + ㅏ = 하.

  4. Read out loud for 10 to 15 minutes a day instead of only copying letters. Reading speed comes from your mouth, not from writing drills.

  5. Drop romanisation as fast as you can. English spellings like "eo" and "eu" hide the real sounds, so copy native audio instead.

  6. Learn final consonants, called batchim, early. They reduce to seven representative sounds: ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ and ㅇ.

  7. Use the free 두루책방 site for graded reading practice. Copy the word into Google, open the site and read one short book a day.

  8. Record yourself reading a page, then compare it with a native clip of the same text. Fix one sound at a time rather than everything at once.

  9. Add sound change rules only after reading feels automatic. Chasing every rule too early slows you down and kills your motivation.

Tips and common mistakes

Do not wait for perfect pronunciation before moving on, small errors fix themselves as you hear more Korean.

Write letters by hand for the first week, because the muscle memory makes recall much faster.

Review letters with flashcards for five minutes daily instead of one long weekend session.

Learn Hangul fully before starting grammar, otherwise every new sentence becomes a reading exercise.

Questions

How long does it take to read Hangul?

Most beginners read simple words within a few days and read short sentences comfortably in two to three weeks of daily practice. Speed comes later, so do not rush it.

Should I use romanisation to learn Korean?

Use it only as a short crutch in the first day or two. Korean sounds do not map cleanly to English letters, so romanisation builds habits you have to unlearn.

Do I need to learn hanja to read Korean?

No. Everyday Korean is written in Hangul, and hanja is optional vocabulary study you can pick up much later if you want it.
