How to learn 10,000 vocabulary words in any language

You will build a vocabulary system that starts with the most used words in your target language and locks them in with spaced review. It suits beginners and intermediate learners who freeze when they try to speak. You need a phone or computer, a flashcard app and about 20 minutes a day.

What you need

Steps

  1. Pick one target language and choose a daily word goal, such as 10 new words a day. Write the goal somewhere you will see it.

  2. Get a frequency word list for your language. Learn the top 1,000 words first, because they cover most of what people say and write every day.

  3. Split your words into two lists: passive words you only need to recognise, and active words you want to say yourself.

  4. Put new words into a spaced repetition app like Anki. Review each card on day 1, day 3, day 7 and day 21 so it sticks.

  5. Stop copying random word lists. Only add words you met in a real sentence, a show, a song or a chat, so you have context to hang them on.

  6. Build language islands: short scripts about your own life, like your job, family or weekend. Finish one island's words before starting the next.

  7. Practise one sentence at a time. Read it, say it out loud from memory, then swap one word to build a new sentence you can use.

  8. Watch shows with subtitles in the target language, not your native one. Pause on lines you almost understand and add the new words to your deck.

  9. Before a new series, rewatch the first episode of a show you already know well in your own language. The familiar plot makes the target language easier to follow.

  10. Test yourself each week by covering the translations. Move words you get right into a review pile and send the misses back to daily practice.

Tips and common mistakes

Ten new words a day is plenty. Fifty a day feels productive but most of them will be gone in a week.

Say every word out loud. Reading silently builds recognition but not the recall you need for speaking.

Leave rare words for later. A word you use once a year is not worth a flashcard yet.

Delete cards you keep failing and relearn that word inside a full sentence instead.

Questions

How many words do I need to speak a language?

About 1,000 high-frequency words cover most everyday conversation. Push towards 3,000 to 5,000 and shows, podcasts and articles get much easier.

How long does it take to learn 10,000 words?

At 10 new words a day, roughly three years of steady review. Most people hold a comfortable conversation long before that, near the 2,000 word mark.

Do flashcards actually work?

Yes, when you review them on a spaced schedule and use each word in a spoken sentence. Cards alone will not make you speak.
