Steps
Press and quickly release the volume up button on the left edge of the phone. Do not hold it down, a short click is enough.
Press and quickly release the volume down button, the one just below it. Again, keep it brief.
Press and hold the side button on the right edge of the phone. If a slide to power off slider appears, ignore it and keep holding.
Keep holding the side button for about 10 to 20 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen. Then let go.
Wait for the phone to finish starting up, then it with your passcode as usual. Nothing has been deleted.
Tips and common mistakes
The order matters: volume up, volume down, then hold the side button. Holding the volume buttons instead will open other menus.
A forced restart does not erase data, so it is safe to try before a factory reset.
If the screen stays black, charge the phone for 15 minutes and repeat the button sequence.
If the Apple logo loops on and off or the phone freezes again straight away, update iOS or book a service check.
Questions
Will a forced restart delete my photos or apps?
No. It only cuts the power and reboots the phone, so your photos, apps and settings stay exactly as they were. You still with your normal passcode.
What is the difference between a forced restart and a factory reset?
A forced restart just reboots the phone when the touchscreen or an app is stuck. A factory reset wipes the phone and sets it up from scratch, which is much more drastic.
Why does my iPhone 14 keep freezing?
Often it is one app or a pending iOS update. Restart the phone, update your apps and iOS, and if it keeps happening, back up and contact Apple support.
