How to fix an iPhone that won't charge by cleaning its port

A dirty port is the usual reason an iPhone cable feels loose or refuses to charge. This guide shows you how to pull out pocket lint, clean the pins with isopropyl alcohol and rule out the cable, the charger and the 80 percent battery setting. It suits any Lightning or USB-C iPhone.

What you need

Steps

  1. Power off your iPhone and unplug the cable. Shine a light into the port and look closely, so you can see where the lint is packed against the back wall.

  2. Scrape the lint out with the pointed end of a plastic flosser. Work gently along the back of the port, then tip the phone down so the debris falls out.

  3. Check your cable before blaming the phone. Look for bent pins, frayed ends, dark corrosion or a plug that no longer clicks in, then try a second known good cable.

  4. Dampen a cotton swab or soft brush with 99.9% isopropyl alcohol and squeeze off the excess. Wipe the pins in the port and on the cable plug, then let it dry for a few minutes.

  5. Blow the loosened dust out with short puffs from a blower. Skip canned compressed air, which can push debris deeper into the port and damage the pins.

  6. Plug the phone in and check that the cable sits flush and the battery icon shows charging. Wiggle the plug slightly to see whether the connection holds.

  7. If the cable still will not stay in, set the phone on a MagSafe or Qi wireless charger. If it charges there, the battery and charging circuit are fine.

  8. If charging stops at 80 percent, open Settings, tap Battery, then Charging, and turn off Optimized Battery Charging. On the lock screen you can also tap Charge to Full Now.

Tips and common mistakes

Never poke the port with a metal paperclip, SIM tool or pin, because the pins bend or short out easily.

Use 99 percent isopropyl alcohol only. Water and contact sprays leave residue and take far longer to dry.

The 80 percent stop is usually the Optimized Battery Charging feature, not a broken port, so test that setting before booking a repair.

If the port still feels loose after cleaning, the connector is probably worn and needs a repair shop.

Questions

Why does my iPhone stop charging at 80 percent?

Optimized Battery Charging pauses at 80 percent to protect the battery and finishes before you wake up. Turn it off under Settings, Battery, Charging, or tap Charge to Full Now on the lock screen.

Can I clean the port with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol?

Use 99 percent isopropyl alcohol rather than rubbing alcohol or water. Dampen the swab lightly, squeeze out the excess and let the port dry fully before you plug anything in.

How do I know if the port or the cable is broken?

Try a second known good cable first. If wireless charging works but no cable will charge, the port is either still dirty or damaged.
