Steps
Charge the case on its own for 15 minutes with a cable and adapter you know work, then check the status light. Amber means partly charged and green means full.
Take both AirPods out and look inside each well and at the metal ring on the bottom of each stem. Remove lint, dust or earwax with a dry cotton swab.
Wipe the case contacts with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not drip water or alcohol inside the case, and never scrape the contacts with metal.
Put the AirPods back in and press each one down gently so it sits flat on the contacts. Watch the status light for a response.
Try a different cable and a different power source, such as a USB port on a computer or another wall adapter. Swap one at a time so you know what fixed it.
Check the temperature. Charge the case somewhere between 0°C and 35°C (32°F and 95°F), because a cold or hot case may refuse to charge.
Reset the AirPods: put them in the case, close the lid, wait 30 seconds, then open it and hold the button on the back for about 15 seconds until the light flashes amber, then white.
Pair them again by holding the case near your iPhone and tapping Connect, then leave them to charge for about 2 hours for a full charge.
Tips and common mistakes
Do not blow compressed air or push a pin into the charging port, as this can damage the contacts.
If only one AirPod fails, swap it to the other well to test whether the problem is the AirPod or the case.
If the case still will not hold a charge after cleaning and a reset, book a battery service with Apple.
Questions
How long do AirPods take to charge?
A full charge takes about 2 hours in the case. A short 15 minute top-up gives a few hours of listening.
Why is the status light amber?
Amber means the case has less than a full charge, and green means it is charged. If the light never changes, the cable or adapter is the likely culprit.
Does resetting delete my settings?
It unpairs the AirPods from your devices and clears their settings. You simply pair them again afterwards, and nothing is lost from your phone.
