Steps
Unscrew the valve cap and let all the air out of the tyre. Press the valve pin if it is a Schrader valve, or unscrew the small nut on a Presta valve.
Push a tyre lever under the tyre bead and hook it onto a spoke. Use a second lever about 10 cm along and run it around the rim to free one side of the tyre.
Pull the inner tube out of the tyre, keeping track of which way it sat so you can refit it in the same position.
Put a little air in the tube and dip it in water, section by section. Mark the spot where bubbles stream out with chalk.
Dry the tube and roughen the area around the hole with the sandpaper in the kit. Spread a thin layer of rubber cement and wait about a minute until it feels tacky.
Press the patch onto the cement, hold it firmly for 30 seconds, then peel off the backing. Check that the edges sit flat with no lifted corners.
Feel carefully around the inside of the tyre for the thorn, glass or wire that caused the hole, and remove it. Use a cloth or your knuckles rather than dragging a bare fingertip.
Push the valve through the rim hole and work the tube inside the tyre. Press the bead back onto the rim by hand, working around the wheel.
Pump the tyre to the pressure printed on the sidewall and check the moulded line near the rim sits evenly all the way around.
Tips and common mistakes
The water test is faster than listening for a hiss, especially on a slow puncture.
Inflate slowly and stop if the tyre looks uneven, then push the bead back into place.
Carry a spare tube on rides so you can swap it at the roadside and patch the old one at home.
Check the tyre casing before refitting, or the same sharp object will puncture the new tube.
Questions
How do I find a tiny puncture?
Put some air in the tube and dip it in water in short sections. A stream of bubbles shows the hole, even when it is too small to feel.
Can I fix a puncture without a patch kit?
You can fit a spare inner tube instead, which is quicker. A patch is the cheaper repair and works fine as long as the tube is dry and the cement has gone tacky before you apply it.
How hard should the tyre be?
Pump to the pressure range printed on the tyre sidewall. Check that the bead line sits evenly above the rim all the way around before you ride.
