What you need
Steps
Place your paper on a flat surface and hold the pencil loosely. Sketch a wide oval in the middle of the page for the pumpkin body. Keep the line light so you can erase it later.
Draw a second oval that overlaps the first, slightly to one side. This gives the pumpkin its ribbed, rounded shape.
Add one or two more overlapping ovals until you have four or five ribs. Make the outer ribs narrower than the middle one.
Draw a short curved line down each rib where the ovals cross. These lines show the grooves between the sections.
Sketch a small thick stalk on top, slightly off centre. Add a short curly tendril beside it if you like.
Erase the guide lines you no longer need and darken the outline with a firmer pencil line. Keep the outline clean and even.
Decide where the light comes from, for example the top left. Shade the opposite side and the grooves with the side of a 2B pencil.
Build the shading in light layers, going darker in the grooves and near the base. Blend gently with a tissue or stump for a smooth look.
Leave a small unshaded patch on the lit side as a highlight. Add a soft shadow under the pumpkin to sit it on the ground.
Tips and common mistakes
Start with very light pencil lines so mistakes erase cleanly without smudging the paper.
Shade in thin layers rather than pressing hard at once, which keeps the pencil marks even.
Keep the light direction the same on every rib, or the pumpkin will look lumpy.
Sharpen your pencil for outlines and use the flat side of the lead for soft shading.
Questions
Do I need special pencils to draw a pumpkin?
No. A normal HB pencil works for the outline, and a softer 2B or 4B makes shading easier. A cheap eraser and sharpener are enough to start.
How do I make the pumpkin look round instead of flat?
Shade the curved sides and grooves darker and leave a highlight on the lit side. A soft shadow underneath also helps it look three dimensional.
Can kids do this drawing?
Yes. The overlapping oval method is simple enough for children. Skip the fine shading and let them colour the pumpkin instead.
