What you need
Steps
Draw a light circle for the head, then a small vertical line down the middle to mark the face centre. Keep the pencil pressure very light so you can erase later.
Add a cross line across the middle for the eye level. Place the eyes slightly below this line, since anime faces put the eyes low on the head.
Sketch the jaw as a soft curve narrowing to a small chin. Anime chins are pointed, so taper the sides inward rather than making a round face.
Draw the open eye as a large oval with a thick upper lash line. Add a small highlight circle inside, then a pupil and a lower lash line.
For the winking eye, draw a curved line like a shallow upside-down U. Add two or three short lashes at the outer corner to make it read as a wink.
Place the nose as a tiny dot or short dash between the eyes and chin. Add a small smiling mouth just below it, curving up at the ends.
Sketch the hair as a cap over the top of the head, then add strands falling past the shoulders. Keep the lines loose and slightly curved for soft hair.
Draw the pink bow on one side of the head, above the ear area. Use two loops and two short tails, then colour it in with the pink pencil.
Erase the guide circle and cross lines, then go over the final outlines with firmer pencil strokes. Darken the upper lash line and the hair outline.
Shade the hair and the sides of the face with light, even pencil strokes. Blend with a cotton bud for soft shading, and leave the highlights white.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep your first outlines very light so mistakes erase cleanly without smudging the paper.
Draw the eyes before the hair, because hair strands often overlap the top of the eye area.
Shade in one direction only, then blend, to avoid a scratchy look on the face.
Use a reference photo of a winking anime face to check eye spacing and chin shape.
Questions
Do I need special drawing pencils?
No. A standard HB pencil works for the outlines and a 2B gives darker shading. Any pink pencil or marker is fine for the bow.
How do I make the wink look natural?
Curve the closed eye line downward at the outer corner and add a couple of short lashes. Keep the open eye wide so the contrast reads clearly.
How long should the sketch take?
Most beginners finish in about 30 minutes. The shading step takes the longest, so do not rush it.
