Steps
Draw a light oval for the head. Keep the pencil pressure soft so you can erase it later. Make it slightly narrower at the chin than at the top.
Draw a vertical line down the middle of the oval. This is the centre line that keeps the eyes, nose and mouth lined up.
Draw a horizontal line across the middle of the oval. The eyes sit on this line, roughly halfway down the head.
Split the lower half into thirds with two more light lines. The nose ends near the first line and the mouth sits near the second.
Sketch two almond shapes on the middle line, one on each side of the centre. Leave a gap of about one eye width between them.
Add a small circle for the iris in each eye and a dot for the pupil. Draw the upper lid line slightly thicker than the lower one.
Draw the nose as a soft curve down the centre line, ending in two small nostril curves. Keep the lines light and short.
Place the mouth on the lower third line. Draw a gentle curve for the top lip and a fuller curve for the bottom lip.
Add the ears on each side, from the eye line down to the nose line. Draw the outer curve first, then a light inner fold.
Erase the guide lines, then darken the eyes, nostrils and mouth line. Add light shading under the chin and along one side of the face.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep every early line light so mistakes are easy to erase.
Check the spacing: the eyes are about one eye width apart, and the face is about five eyes wide.
Draw the whole face before adding detail, so the proportions stay balanced.
Practise the same layout several times rather than chasing a perfect single drawing.
Questions
Do I need special pencils to draw a face?
No. A standard HB pencil and a soft eraser are enough to start. A 2B pencil helps if you want darker shading.
Why do my eyes end up in the wrong place?
The eyes usually sit on the middle horizontal line of the head, not near the top. Draw that guide line first and place the eyes on it.
How long should I practise each day?
Short daily sessions of 10 to 15 minutes work better than one long session. Repeat the same face layout until the spacing feels natural.
