What you need

Steps

  1. Place your paper upright and sketch a wide oval in the centre for the pumpkin body. Keep the lines light so you can erase them later.

  2. Draw two curved vertical lines inside the oval to split the pumpkin into rounded segments. Add a small curved line at each side for extra lobes.

  3. Sketch a short stalk on top of the pumpkin. Then draw a triangle above it for the witch hat, with a wide brim line crossing the base.

  4. Add a bent tip to the hat and a curved band near the brim. Draw a small buckle or star on the band if you want extra detail.

  5. Draw the scary face: two angled triangle eyes, a small triangle nose and a wide jagged mouth. Make the eyes slant inward for a mean look.

  6. Darken the pumpkin outline and the hat with firmer pencil strokes. Erase the light guide lines you no longer need.

  7. Shade the pumpkin segments with light pencil strokes, leaving a lighter area on one side. Shade the hat darker than the pumpkin.

  8. Add a soft shadow under the pumpkin and darken the inside of the eyes and mouth. Blend the shading with your finger or a tissue.

Tips and common mistakes

Start with light pencil lines so mistakes are easy to erase.

Keep both eyes angled the same way or the face will look lopsided.

Shade in one direction to keep the pumpkin looking smooth.

Use a 2B pencil for the dark areas and an HB for the light shading.

Questions

Do I need special drawing paper?

No. Plain printer paper works fine for this sketch. Heavier sketch paper just holds up better if you shade a lot.

Can kids do this drawing?

Yes. The shapes are simple ovals, triangles and curves, so most kids can follow along with a little help on the hat.

How do I make the pumpkin look scarier?

Slant the eyes more, add sharper teeth and shade the eye sockets darker. A crooked hat tip also helps.
