Steps
Draw a light oval for the head. Mark a vertical line down the middle and a horizontal line across the middle. These guide lines keep the face symmetrical.
Divide the lower half of the oval into three equal bands. Place the eyes on the middle line, the base of the nose on the next line, and the mouth halfway between nose and chin.
Sketch the eyes as two almond shapes about one eye-width apart. Draw a circle inside each for the iris and a small highlight dot. Keep the lines light.
Mark the nose with a small curved line for the tip and two short lines for the nostrils. Keep it simple and avoid hard outlines.
Draw the mouth as a shallow curve for the top lip and a fuller curve for the bottom lip. Add a soft line under the lower lip for the shadow.
Add the ears between the eye line and the nose line, then sketch the jaw and hairline. Shape the hair as big blocks before adding strands.
Erase the guide lines gently with a kneaded eraser. Redraw any features that look off before you start shading.
Shade the shadow areas with a 2B pencil: under the chin, beside the nose, the eye sockets and one side of the face. Blend with a stump or cotton bud.
Darken the pupils, the lash line and the deepest shadows with a 4B pencil. Leave the highlights on the eyes, nose and lips white.
Draw the hair in curved groups of strands, darker at the roots and lighter at the ends. Step back to check the whole face and adjust.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep your first lines very light so mistakes are easy to erase.
Shade in small circles or light strokes instead of pressing hard.
Check proportions by holding the drawing up to a mirror; errors show up fast.
Sharpen your pencil often for fine details like eyelashes and lip lines.
Questions
Do I need special pencils to draw a face?
No. An HB pencil plus one soft 2B or 4B pencil covers most of the work. A kneaded eraser helps you lift shading without damaging the paper.
How do I get the eyes the same size?
Use the guide lines and measure with your pencil. The gap between the eyes should be about one eye wide, and each eye sits on the middle horizontal line.
Why does my portrait look flat?
You probably skipped the shadows. Add darker shading under the chin, around the eyes and on one side of the face, and keep the highlights clean.
