How to draw a realistic eye with pencil step by step

Draw a convincing pencil eye by building it in layers, from a light outline to shaded iris, lid and lashes. It suits beginners and improvers who want a clear order of work. You only need a pencil, paper, an eraser and a blending tool.

Steps

  1. Draw a light almond outline for the eye shape with an HB pencil. Keep the line faint so you can adjust it. Mark a circle inside for the iris and a smaller one for the pupil.

  2. Check the proportions. The iris should touch the top and bottom lids, and the pupil sits in the centre. Erase and redraw until the shape looks balanced.

  3. Add the upper lid crease as a soft curved line above the eye. Sketch a light line for the lower lid edge and a small highlight circle on the iris.

  4. Shade the pupil with the 4B pencil, leaving the highlight white. Fill the iris with light strokes radiating from the pupil outward.

  5. Darken the top of the iris and the outer ring slightly. Blend the iris gently with a stump or cotton bud, then lift a little graphite with the kneaded eraser for shine.

  6. Shade the white of the eye lightly near the corners and under the upper lid. Leave the centre bright so the eye looks wet and round.

  7. Draw the upper lash line thick and dark with the 4B pencil. Add individual lashes that curve up and outward, thicker at the root and tapering at the tip.

  8. Add a thinner lower lash line and a few short lower lashes. Shade the crease and the skin around the eye with light hatching to set the eye into the face.

  9. Blend the skin shading softly, then sharpen the darkest edges again. Compare both sides of the eye and adjust the highlight and pupil size if needed.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep your pencil sharp for lashes and iris detail, and use the flat side for soft skin shading.

Build tone in light layers instead of pressing hard, so the paper does not shine or tear.

Place the highlight before you darken the pupil so you do not have to erase graphite later.

Draw the eye from a photo reference and check it in a mirror to spot lopsided shapes.

Questions

Do I need special pencils to draw a realistic eye?

No. An HB plus a 2B or 4B pencil covers most of the work. A kneaded eraser and a blending stump help, but a cotton bud works too.

How long does a realistic eye drawing take?

A first attempt takes about 30 minutes. Detailed versions with fine lashes and skin texture can take an hour or more.

Why does my eye look flat?

Usually the highlight is missing or the shading is even all over. Darken the pupil and lash line, keep a bright highlight, and shade the corners of the eye.
