What you need
Steps
Place your paper flat and hold the pencil lightly. Sketch a wide oval in the middle of the page for the pumpkin body. Keep the line faint so you can adjust it later.
Draw a second oval that overlaps the first, slightly to one side. This becomes the next rib of the pumpkin.
Add two or three more overlapping ovals across the body until the pumpkin looks round and full. Leave a small gap at the top center.
Draw a short, thick stem in the gap at the top. Make it slightly curved and a little wider at the base.
Sketch a small curled tendril coming off the stem. Add one or two simple leaf shapes beside the stem.
Go over the outer outline with a darker line and erase the inner guide lines. Keep the curved rib lines visible inside the pumpkin.
Repeat the same steps smaller and to the side to build a pumpkin patch. Vary the sizes and stem angles so they look different.
Color the pumpkin with orange, shading the ribs darker and leaving a lighter area on one side. Color the stem and leaves green.
Tips and common mistakes
Draw your guide lines lightly so mistakes rub out without smudging the paper.
Curve the rib lines inward at the top and bottom so the pumpkin looks round, not flat.
Shade one side of each rib darker to give the pumpkin depth.
Keep the stem short and thick, since a long thin stem looks like a flower stalk.
Questions
What pencil should I use for this drawing?
A 2B drawing pencil works well because it is soft enough to shade but still easy to erase. A normal HB pencil or a fine marker is fine too.
Do I have to color the pumpkin?
No. The drawing works as a pencil sketch on its own. Coloring is optional and helps if you want the pumpkin to look more finished.
Can kids do this drawing?
Yes. The overlapping oval method is simple enough for children, and an adult can help with the darker outline and erasing.
