What you need

Steps

  1. Draw a light oval for the head. Mark a vertical center line down the middle and a horizontal line across the middle. These guide where the features sit.

  2. Split the lower half into thirds with two light horizontal lines. The eyes sit on the first line, the nose base on the second, and the mouth between the nose and chin.

  3. Place the eyes one eye-width apart. Sketch each eye as an almond shape with a circle for the iris and a small dark pupil.

  4. Draw the nose as a soft triangle from between the brows down to the nose base. Add two small curved nostrils and keep the lines light.

  5. Sketch the lips as a wide shallow curve for the top lip and a fuller curve below. Add a short line in the middle where the lips meet.

  6. Draw the ears between the eye line and the nose line on each side. Keep them simple curved shapes with a small inner fold.

  7. Practice a side view by drawing a circle for the skull and adding a curved jaw. Place the eye near the front edge and the ear behind the center.

  8. Erase the guide lines and darken the features you like. Add light shading under the chin, nose and lips for depth.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep your pencil lines light at first so mistakes are easy to erase.

Check proportions by holding your drawing at arm's length or in a mirror.

Draw the eyes, nose and mouth on the guide lines before adding detail.

Practice one feature at a time on scrap paper before a full face.

Questions

Do I need special art supplies?

No. A plain pencil, eraser and any paper work fine. A 2B pencil gives softer lines if you have one.

How long does it take to get good at faces?

It varies. Short daily practice of 15 to 20 minutes helps more than one long session.

Why do my faces look off?

Usually the spacing is wrong. Recheck that the eyes are one eye-width apart and the features sit on the guide lines.
