How to draw a face at a 3/4 angle using simple shapes

Build a 3/4 view portrait from basic shapes and guide lines, then place the eyes, nose, mouth, ears and hairline. It suits beginners who can hold a pencil and want a repeatable method. All you need is paper, a pencil and an eraser.

What you need

Steps

  1. Draw a circle for the cranium. Lightly mark a vertical line down the middle and a horizontal line across the middle for the brow.

  2. Add a curved jaw and chin below the circle. Because the head is turned, shift the center line toward the far side of the face.

  3. Place the eyes on the brow line. The near eye sits close to the center line and looks wider, the far eye is narrower and partly hidden by the nose bridge.

  4. Draw the eyebrows just above the eyes, following the curve of the brow line. Keep the far brow shorter.

  5. Sketch the nose on the center line. The bridge starts between the brows and the tip sits about halfway between the brow line and the chin.

  6. Mark the mouth below the nose, roughly one third of the way from the nose to the chin. The far corner curves back toward the cheek.

  7. Add the ear on the visible side, from the brow line down to the base of the nose. The far ear is hidden.

  8. Draw the hairline above the brow line and shape the hair around the skull. Erase the guide lines and darken the final lines.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep every guideline light so you can erase it cleanly at the end.

Use a make-up sponge to soften pencil guidelines instead of smudging with your hand.

Change eye shape, jaw width and nose length to make each portrait look different.

Check the far eye and ear are smaller than the near ones to keep the turn believable.

Questions

Do I need special pencils?

No. A normal graphite pencil and eraser work fine. A colored pencil like the one in the video just makes light guidelines easier to see.

Why is the far eye smaller?

The head is turned, so the far side of the face is foreshortened. Drawing it narrower and closer to the center line keeps the 3/4 angle looking right.

How long should I practice?

Draw the same head shape several times before adding features. Repeat the full face a few times to build muscle memory.
