What you need
Steps
Draw a wide oval for the pumpkin body, then add curved lines from the top to the bottom to make the ribs. Keep the lines light so you can change them later.
Sketch a short, slightly bent stem on top of the pumpkin. Give it two edges and a small cut top so it looks like a real stalk.
Add the jack-o'-lantern face: two triangle eyes and a small cheerful mouth with a couple of square teeth. Keep the shapes simple and centred.
Draw a tiny spider hanging beside the pumpkin on a short curved thread, plus a few small legs.
Erase the light guide lines you no longer need, then go over the final outlines with a black fineliner. Let the ink dry.
Colour the pumpkin with light orange first, going around each rib and leaving the middle of each section paler.
Shade with a darker orange or brown along the rib lines, under the stem and at the bottom edge to make the pumpkin look round.
Colour the stem green and the spider dark grey or black. Add a soft shadow on the ground under the pumpkin.
Finish with white gel pen highlights on the top curves of the ribs and on the eyes to make the drawing pop.
Tips and common mistakes
Sketch everything in pencil first, because a lopsided oval is easy to fix before you ink it.
Curve the rib lines outward rather than drawing them straight, or the pumpkin will look flat.
Build the shading in two or three light layers instead of pressing hard once.
Keep your light source in one place, for example the top left, so every highlight and shadow matches.
Questions
Can I do this drawing with just a pencil?
Yes. Use the pencil for outlines and vary the pressure for shading, pressing harder where the ribs curve inward. Markers only make the colouring faster.
My pumpkin looks uneven. How do I fix it?
Turn the paper around and check the oval from a distance, then redraw the wider side with light strokes. Keep the ribs evenly spaced to hide small bumps.
How long does the drawing take?
About 25 minutes at a relaxed pace, with most of that time spent on colouring and shading. The pencil sketch takes around 5 minutes.
