What you need
Steps
Warm a small amount of liquid brown eyeshadow on the back of your hand. Pat it over the lid and blend a little above the crease with a fluffy brush.
Draw the brown pencil along the upper lash line and slightly beyond the outer corner. Smudge the line upward and outward with a small smudging brush.
Apply your base tint or foundation and blend it out with a buffing brush. Add concealer under the eyes and on any redness.
Deepen the outer corner with a little more pencil, then blend so the shadow fades softly toward the brow bone.
Tap blush onto the cheeks and soften any hard edges around the eye with a clean blending brush.
Curl your lashes and apply one or two coats of black mascara, wiggling the wand at the roots.
Brush brow gel through your brows, pressing the hairs upward and outward for a fluffy finish.
Sweep bronzer along the cheekbones and lightly through the eye crease to tie the look together.
Apply a lip pencil and a muted lip colour, then finish with highlighter on the high points of the face.
Tips and common mistakes
Keep the darkest colour close to the lash line so the smoke stays soft and wearable.
Build the shadow in thin layers instead of one heavy coat, or it will crease and patch.
Use a clean brush to soften edges rather than adding more product.
If you have green eyes, warm chocolate and bronze tones make them stand out.
Questions
Do I need the exact products shown?
No. Any cream or liquid brown shadow, a soft brown pencil and a small smudging brush will give a similar result.
How do I stop the smoky eye from smudging during the day?
Set the pencil along the lash line with a little matching matte shadow and keep the cream shadow thin near the crease.
Can I wear this look in the daytime?
Yes. Keep the shadow close to the lash line and skip a heavy lower lash line for a softer daytime version.
