What you need
Steps
Wash your face and apply a thin layer of moisturiser. Wait two minutes so it sinks in, then smooth a drugstore primer over your T-zone and cheeks to help makeup last.
Dot foundation onto your forehead, cheeks and chin. Blend it out with a damp sponge using small tapping motions until the edges disappear into your neck.
Apply concealer under your eyes and on any spots. Tap it in with your ring finger or a small brush, then set the whole face with a light dusting of powder.
Fill in your brows with a pencil or pomade using short strokes in the direction of the hair. Brush through with a spoolie to soften the lines.
Sweep a light neutral shade over the whole lid, then a mid tone in the crease. Blend in small circles so there are no hard edges.
Line your upper lash line with eyeliner and add two coats of mascara. Wiggle the wand at the base of the lashes to lift them.
Swipe blush on the apples of your cheeks and blend bronzer along your jaw and temples. Add highlighter to the tops of your cheekbones.
Line and fill your lips, then apply lipstick or gloss over the top. Blot once with a tissue for a longer lasting finish.
Mist setting spray over your face from about 20 cm away. Let it dry fully before touching your face or leaving the house.
Tips and common mistakes
Use a damp sponge rather than a dry one so the foundation sits smoothly and does not look cakey.
Build concealer in thin layers instead of one heavy coat, which creases less under the eyes.
Powder only the areas that get oily, since powdering everywhere can make dry skin look flat.
Check your makeup in natural light near a window before you go out.
Questions
Do I need expensive brushes for this look?
No. A damp sponge and two or three basic brushes cover most of the steps. Drugstore brush sets work fine for blending eyeshadow and blush.
How do I stop drugstore foundation from looking patchy?
Prep with moisturiser and primer first, then apply thin layers and blend each one fully. Tapping with a damp sponge gives a smoother finish than rubbing.
How long does a full beat like this take?
Plan around 30 minutes when you are learning. With practice most people get it down to 15 to 20 minutes.
