What you need

Steps

  1. Clear a small area and lay out your mat. Set a timer for 30 seconds of work with 5 seconds of rest between each move.

  2. Start with jumping jacks. Keep a steady pace and land softly on the balls of your feet.

  3. Do cross toe touches. Kick one leg up and reach the opposite hand toward your toe, then switch sides.

  4. Move into squat and front kicks. Squat down, stand up and kick one leg forward, then alternate legs.

  5. Open your chest and do butt kicks. Pull your arms back to open the chest, then jog your heels toward your glutes.

  6. Make big arm circles forward, then switch direction halfway through the interval.

  7. Do standing knee drives. Drive one knee up toward your chest while swinging the opposite arm, then switch.

  8. Walk your hands out to a plank, do a push up, then walk your hands back and stand.

  9. From down dog, tuck one knee toward your chest, return, and switch sides.

  10. Finish with lateral lunges and high knees. Step out to the side and lunge, then run your knees up in place.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep each move at a pace you can control so you raise your heart rate without getting out of breath.

Land softly and keep your knees tracking over your toes during squats and lunges.

If a move hurts a joint, swap it for a gentler version such as marching instead of high knees.

Do this before every session, not just ab days, to prepare your whole body.

Questions

Do I need any equipment?

No. A mat is optional and helps with the inchworm and down dog moves. You can do the whole routine on a bare floor.

Can I do this in a small apartment?

Yes. All the moves stay in one spot, and you can swap jumping jacks and high knees for marching if noise is a concern.

How long should I rest between moves?

Follow the 30 seconds work and 5 seconds rest pattern. That keeps the warm up to about 5 minutes.
