How to create a line graph with multiple lines in Excel

You will turn two or more columns of data into one line chart, so you can compare trends side by side. It suits anyone who can open a spreadsheet and select cells. You need your categories in one column and each series in its own column, with Excel installed.

What you need

Steps

  1. Put your category labels in the first column and each data series in its own column, with clear header names in the top row.

  2. Select the whole range, including the headers, then go to Insert, click the Line chart icon and choose a line chart style.

  3. Check that Excel has plotted each column as a separate line. If a series is missing, right-click the chart and choose Select Data.

  4. In Select Data, click Add under Legend Entries, type a series name, then select that column's values and click OK.

  5. Use the chart filter button beside the chart to tick or untick series, or use Select Data to hide a line without deleting its data.

  6. To remove a line, open Select Data, select the series in the list and click Remove. To edit it, click Edit and reselect its values.

  7. Click the chart, use the plus button to add axis titles, a legend and data labels, then change line colours or styles from the Format pane.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep categories in the same order as your data, because a line chart connects points in the order Excel reads them.

Use a line chart for trends over time, not for unrelated categories such as separate products.

Leave totals out of a chart that also shows the parts, or the total line will flatten the smaller lines.

If lines overlap, use different colours or add markers so each series stays easy to tell apart.

Questions

Why is only one line showing on my chart?

A missing line usually means its column was not included in the selected range. Right-click the chart, choose Select Data and add or edit the series.

Can I put one line on a secondary axis?

Yes. Right-click the line you want to move, choose Format Data Series and set it to plot on a secondary axis. This helps when the series use very different scales.

How do I change the line colours?

Click the line once to select the series, then use the Format pane to change its colour, width or marker style. You can also apply a chart style for a quick change.
