Steps

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPad and scroll down the list on the left until you reach Safari. Tap it to open the Safari settings page.

  2. Scroll down that page and tap Clear History and Website Data. This one button removes your browsing history, cookies and cached site files together.

  3. Tap Clear History and Data in the pop-up to confirm. Some sites will log you out because their cookies are gone.

  4. To clear from Safari instead, open the app and tap the sidebar icon at the top left of the screen.

  5. Tap the clock tab in the sidebar to show your History list, then tap Clear in the bottom right corner.

  6. Choose a time range: the last hour, today, today and yesterday, or all history. Tap Clear History to finish.

  7. To delete only cookies and cached files, go to Settings, then Safari, then Advanced, then Website Data, and tap Remove All Website Data.

  8. To stop Safari saving history at all, open Safari, tap the tab button, choose Private, then tap the plus button for a private tab.

Tips and common mistakes

If Safari is switched on in your iCloud settings, clearing history on the iPad also clears it on other devices using the same Apple account.

Bookmarks, Reading List items and saved passwords are not removed when you clear history.

Clear only Website Data if you want to stay signed in to sites but still free up space.

Check Settings, Safari, Advanced, Website Data to see which sites are storing the most data before you wipe everything.

Questions

Does clearing Safari history delete my bookmarks and passwords?

No. Bookmarks, Reading List entries and saved passwords stay on the iPad. Only the record of pages you visited is removed, plus cookies and cached files if you use Clear History and Website Data.

Will this clear history on my iPhone as well?

It can. If both devices use the same Apple account and Safari is turned on in iCloud settings, browsing history syncs, so clearing it on the iPad removes it on the iPhone too.

Does clearing history free up storage space?

Only a little. Cached website data does take up space, so removing it helps slightly, but photos, apps and videos usually use far more of your storage.
