Steps

  1. Open Safari on your Mac and make sure no important tabs are mid-way through something, like an upload or a form.

  2. Click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen, then choose Settings. On older macOS versions the same item is called Preferences.

  3. Click the Privacy tab, then click the Manage Website Data button. A list of every site that has stored data appears.

  4. To clear one site only, type its name in the search box, select it and click Remove.

  5. To clear everything, click Remove All and confirm when Safari warns you that all sites will be logged out.

  6. Clear your browsing history too if you want a full reset: open History in the menu bar and pick Clear History, then choose the time range.

  7. Quit Safari completely with Command and Q, then reopen it and load the site that was misbehaving.

Tips and common mistakes

Removing cookies signs you out of websites, so keep a note of any passwords you do not have saved.

If you only want to dump cached files, turn on the Develop menu in Settings, then Advanced, and use Develop, Empty Caches.

Saved passwords, bookmarks and autofill details are not deleted by clearing website data.

Questions

Will I be logged out of websites?

Yes. Cookies keep you signed in, so removing them logs you out of most sites. You will need to sign in again with your saved password.

Does clearing the cache fix a slow Safari?

Often it helps, especially on sites that load stale or broken content. If Safari is still slow, check your extensions and free disk space.

Does this delete my bookmarks and passwords?

No. Bookmarks, history entries you keep and Keychain passwords stay put. Only stored website data and cookies are removed.
