What you need

Steps

  1. Check what kind of class material you have: PowerPoint slides, a recorded lecture or a video clip. Each type needs a slightly different reference entry.

  2. Find the author, usually the instructor who made the slides or recording. Write the last name first, then initials, like Stiegemeyer, J.

  3. Note the date shown on the material. Use the year for slides and the full date for a video. If there is no date, use (n.d.).

  4. Write the title in sentence case and in italics. Add a bracketed description after it, such as [PowerPoint slides] or [Video].

  5. Add the source. For slides, give the department and university. For a video, give the platform name and the URL.

  6. Put the parts in order: author, date, title, description, source. End the reference with a period and use a hanging indent.

  7. Cite the material in your text with the author's last name and year, like (Stiegemeyer, 2021). If no author is named, use a short title.

  8. Check that every in-text citation has a matching reference list entry and that the names and dates agree.

Tips and common mistakes

Use APA 7th edition unless your instructor asks for an older edition.

Do not use the date you viewed the material as the publication date.

For a direct quote from a slide, add the slide number to the citation, like (Stiegemeyer, 2021, slide 4).

Keep the reference list in alphabetical order by the first word of each entry.

Questions

How do I cite lecture slides if no author is listed?

Start the reference with the title of the slides and use a short version of the title in your in-text citation. Ask your instructor if you are unsure who created the slides.

What date do I use for class material?

Use the date printed on the slides or the date the video was posted. If the material has no date, write (n.d.) in place of the year.

Do I need a URL for lecture slides?

Only if the slides are available online. If they are on your course learning system, you can give the login page URL or leave it out when your instructor prefers no link.
