Steps
Park on level ground, run the engine for a couple of minutes to warm the oil, then switch off and let it cool enough to touch safely.
Raise the vehicle and support it on jack stands or ramps. Never get under a vehicle held up only by a jack.
Set the drain pan under the oil pan, remove the drain plug with a socket and let the old oil drain fully. Refit the plug when it stops dripping.
Unscrew the old Mopar oil filter and tip it into the drain pan. Wipe the filter housing surface clean so the new gasket seals.
Smear a little clean oil on the new filter gasket, screw it on hand tight, then fill the engine through a funnel with 0W-40 oil.
Start the engine and let it idle for about a minute. Check under the car for leaks, then switch off and let the oil settle.
Open the electronic oil level screen in the vehicle menu and top up until it reads full. The Hurricane engine has no dipstick.
Reset the oil life monitor on the Ram 1500: open the oil life screen in the cluster or touchscreen settings and confirm the reset.
On a Jeep Grand Wagoneer or Wagoneer, run the same reset from the oil life page in the Uconnect settings, then check the electronic level again.
Tips and common mistakes
Use oil that carries the API certification listed in your owner's manual. The creator notes the AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-40 he tested does not meet Ram's requirement.
Check the electronic oil level only on level ground with the engine off, or the reading will be wrong.
Do not overfill. Add oil in small amounts and recheck the electronic level between top-ups.
The Standard Output and High Output Hurricane engines are not identical, so confirm the capacity and filter for your exact model.
Questions
How much oil does a 3.0L Hurricane take?
It depends on whether you have the Standard Output or High Output version, so check the capacity in your owner's manual before buying oil. The video has a section on the HO capacity and a separate one for the Grand Wagoneer SO.
Why is there no dipstick on my Hurricane engine?
The 3.0L Hurricane uses an electronic oil level and height sensor instead of a dipstick. You read the level from the vehicle menu, and you can also reset that reading from the same screen.
When should I reset the oil life monitor?
Reset it right after every oil and filter change, once the engine is filled to the correct level. If you reset it before refilling, the system will not track the new oil accurately.
