Steps
Let all the air out of the tire and pull the valve core with a core tool. Check the rim for stick-on or clip-on wheel weights and pry them off so nothing catches the machine.
Clamp the wheel on the turntable. On steel rims grab the outer edge, and on alloy rims clamp the outer lip so the jaws stay away from the painted face.
Lower the bead breaker shovel onto the sidewall a few inches in from the rim lip. Push until the bead pops free, then work your way around both sides.
Brush mounting paste around the bead and the rim flange. Lubricant lets the bead slide over the rim instead of tearing.
Set the demount head against the rim edge and hook the pry bar under the bead. Lift the bead over the head, then turn the turntable to walk the rest of the bead off.
Lift the old tire off the rim, flip the wheel and repeat to free the second bead. Wipe the rim clean before the new tire goes on.
Lube the new tire beads, set the lower bead into the rim and lever the upper bead over the demount head while you rotate the turntable.
Inflate with the valve core still out until both beads pop onto the flanges. Refit the core, then set the pressure to the figure on the door placard.
Tips and common mistakes
Always strip the wheel weights first, or the pry bar and breaker shovel will chew up the rim lip.
Use plenty of bead paste on both beads, since a dry bead is the usual reason a tire will not seat.
Keep your hands off the bead breaker and away from the bead while the turntable turns.
Never lean over the tire while you inflate it, and stop if the bead will not seat well below the sidewall max pressure.
Questions
How much pressure does it take to seat a bead?
Most passenger tires seat somewhere between 25 and 40 psi. Add air slowly and stop if the bead refuses to pop, then check the bead is lubed and sitting evenly.
Can I do this without a tire machine?
Breaking a bead and levering a tire on by hand is possible with tire irons and a bead breaker, but it is slow and easy to damage an alloy rim. A machine makes the job safer and faster.
Will a tire machine scratch my alloy wheels?
It can if you clamp the face of the wheel. Clamp the outer lip instead and keep the demount head clear of the spokes.
