What you need

Steps

  1. Choose a silicone caulk that suits the surface. Use acetoxy-cure silicone on ceramic tile and glazed tubs. Use neutral-cure silicone on natural stone and bare metal, since acetoxy releases acetic acid as it cures.

  2. Cut out all the old caulk with a removal tool or utility knife. Scrape the corners clean. New sealant will not bond to old, dirty or loose material.

  3. Wash the joint with rubbing alcohol or a household cleaner and wipe it dry. Let it dry fully. Silicone will not stick to a damp or soapy surface.

  4. Push backer rod into any gap wider than about 6 mm (1/4 inch) so the bead has a base. Leave the silicone about 6 mm deep, not a thin skin over a hollow gap.

  5. Run painter's tape along both sides of the joint, leaving a strip of bare surface the width you want the bead. Press the tape edges down firmly.

  6. Cut the nozzle tip small and at a 45 degree angle. A small opening gives a neater bead than a wide one.

  7. Hold the gun at 45 degrees and pull it along the joint with the nozzle trailing. Push one steady bead without stopping and keep the pressure even.

  8. Smooth the bead in one pass with a wet finger or a smoothing tool. Do not go back over it again and again.

  9. Pull the tape off while the caulk is still wet. Pull it back at an angle away from the bead for a sharp edge.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep a damp cloth handy to wipe your finger between passes.

Do not use silicone over old silicone, since it will not bond and the new bead will peel.

Let the caulk cure fully, usually 24 hours, before you run water on it.

Work in a warm room. Cold surfaces slow curing and make the bead harder to smooth.

Questions

How long before I can use the shower or tub?

Most silicone caulks need about 24 hours to cure. Check the tube label and wait the full time before water touches the joint.

Can I caulk over the old bead?

No. New sealant will not stick to old, dirty or loose caulk. Remove the old bead completely first.

Why did my caulk peel after a few weeks?

Usually the joint was wet, dirty or soapy when you applied it. Clean and dry the gap fully before caulking.
